DOCUMENTS INTRODUCTION

The pamphlets/brochures/papers presented here are organized into divisions that are based on the locations where the knives were made and then into similar type documents. Unfortunately I was unable to put the similar type paperwork in chronological order as the majority of paperwork is not dated.

For each item, one to several images are shown. By clicking on any of the images, you can access a high-resolution image of the front or back sides of the document.

I have assigned unique letter codes to each of the catalogs, pamphlets, cards, tags, price lists, advertisements, letters and photos that are shown below.

Listed below are all the brochures/papers used for John Ek knives that I am aware of. It would be greatly appreciated if you would notify me of any paperwork that I've not shown.

Note: When thumbnail images of multipage documents such as booklets or catalogs are selected, it will bring up a PDF (Portable Document Format) file. If your browser does not include a pdf reader, several free pdf reader programs can be found on the internet.

HAMDEN, CT - 1941-194?

The main documentation of John Ek Hamden knives is in the form of the "Your Silent Partner" (SP) booklets and small paper price lists.

There are two versions of the SP booklets. Both were printed in 1944. There are several different colored covers on the booklets as noted below.

Note that there are two addresses listed for Hamden knives. They are 1242 & 1212 WHITNEY AVENUE (1242 from a price list; 1212 from a Hamden ad). Possibly 1212 is a typo as most have the 1242 address.

[SP Hamden 1st.] SP1

Silent Partner #1 - This is the first "Your silent Partner" booklet. The size is 4 x 6 inches and contains 24 pages. It has a black cover with silver ink.

Although it is not dated, we know it was published in April 1944 as documented on page 4 of the 2nd. printing. I have not seen any 1st. printing SP booklets in any cover color other than black.

The first portion of the booklet consists of knife fighting techniques. The second half shows pictures and descriptions of 10 different knife "Styles" (models). Some of the styles are only refered to with the style number. They are Style 1, Style 2, Style 3, Style 6 and Style 7. The other styles have names as well: Style 4 = "New Guinea Brush Knife", Style 5= "Navy Knife", Style 8="Paratrooper Knife", Style 9="Marine Knife" and Style 10="Floating Knife".

[SP Hamden 1st.] [SP Hamden 1st.] SP2

Silent Partner #2 - This is the 2nd. printing of the "Your silent Partner" booklet. The size is 4 x 6 inches and contains 24 pages. It is dated Aug. 1944 on page 4. I have noted 2 different cover colors, green ink on brown paper and black ink on tan paper.

The SP2 2nd. printing booklet differs from the first printing on only one page. On page 4, below the John Ek signature, are 4 additional lines: "First Printing--April 1944" / "Second Printng-August, 1944" / "JOHN EK KNIVES ARE ON EVERY" / "FIGHTING FRONT IN THE WORLD".

Again, the first portion of the booklet consists of knife fighting techniques.

[PL 1942] PL1942

1942 Price List - This is the only Hamden price list I've noted. The size is approximately 4 x 6 inches and is single sided. It is dated by the March 1942 with an O.P.A. designation.

The Office of Price Administration (OPA), was a U.S. federal agency in World War II that established Maximum Price restrictions to prevent wartime inflation.

Note that it depicts 13 Ek knife styles. This is 3 more knife styles than are listed in the SP booklets. The Style 11 is a non-catalog model, a 9 Marine model with an added cross guard. I believe Style 13 is a set of three Throwing Knives. I'm basing this on the Throwing Knives Instruction sheet, TKINST shown below. Note the $4.95 price at the bottom of the sheet matches the Servicemen's Special Price of Style 13.

Style 12 is a mystery. Possibly an early Utility knife similar to the Miami Model 11, but that is just speculation.

[PL 194x] PL194x

194x Price List - This is the same price list as the PL1942 described above but modified at some later date.

Note that the 4, 8 and 10 knife models have been crossed out and seemingly not offered. These three models had the largest blades and probably were the first 3 of the 5 styles eventually discontinued. Also the prices of all knives have been reduced significantly. Possibly these prices were used during the 1945 post WW-II depression.

[TKINST] TKINST

Throwing Knives Instruction - From the prices of the Throwing Knives, I believe these instructions, reproduced on a Ditto machine, are from the WW-II, Hamden Connectcut era. In comparing prices to the PL1942 price list, you can see a price match with the style 13 Serviceman's Special Price.

The reference to "Leffingwell Chemical Co. Brea, Calif.", handwritten at the top, I've been told is in John Ek's handwriting. In 1965 the Leffingwell Ag Sales Co., Inc.'s chemical company was sold to new ownership which moved production to Brea, CA. So the address was written sometime after 1965. It doesn't appear that the Leffingwell Chemical Co. has anything to do with this sheet. Possibly Mr. Ek just used the sheet to jot down the address for some other reason.

[Hamden Ad 1] HAMDENAD1

Hamden Ad 1- I believe this ad is from the early years of WW-II both by the low price and the mention of the OPA. The Office of Price Administration (OPA), was a U.S. federal agency in World War II that established Maximum Price restrictions to prevent wartime inflation. Note the "Dept. R" in the address. Typically the department indicated the magazine or newspaper that displayed the ad. This helps any company determine how effective their advertizing is in various publications. I'm not sure what publication"Dept. R" refered to.

[Hamden Ad 2] HAMDENAD2

Hamden Ad 2- This ad is from the March 5, 1944 issue of the New York Times Magazine. This date was about a year prior to the end of WW-II and the knives were still restricted to servicemen. Note the "Dept. T" in the address. Typically the department indicated the magazine or newspaper that displayed the ad. This helps any company determine how effective their advertizing is in various publications. "Dept. T" obviously refered to the "Times".

[Hamden Ad3]
Photo: Gunbarrel on usmilitariaforum.com
HAMDENAD3

Hamden Ad 3 - Precise date unknown although from the increase in the knife price it was sometime in 1944 or 1945. Mention of the W.P.B. (War Production Board) indicates it was prior to the end of WW-II as the W.P.B. was replaced by the Civilian Production Administration in late 1945.

Note the "Dept. O" in the address. Typically the department indicated the magazine or newspaper that displayed the ad. This helps any company determine how effective their advertizing is in various publications. The "Dept. O" could possibly have been a referal to "Outdoor Life".

Another interesting item is the address depicted on the ad. 1212 Whitney Ave. is different than the 1242 Whitney Ave. seen on the earlier Hamden ads and price lists.

[ARMY NEWS 1944] ARMYNEWS1944

Army News 1944 - A letter published in the Fort Sill Army News from a Mr. Carl J. Bergman commending John Ek on the quality of his knives and inquiring if Mr. Ek was interested in handling Mr. Bergman's account.

[Hamden Photo] HAMDENPHOTO

Hamden Photo - Photo of John Ek being interviewed about his knives. According to Robert Buerlein the author of "Allied Military Fighting Knives And The Men Who Made Them Famous", the photo was taken in 1944. The woman is holding a #9 Paratrooper knife while John holds the laced sheath for the knife. In the background is what appears to be a display case of knives.

GUILFORD, CT - 194?-194?

Sometime after WW-II ended, John Ek opened a new business, "John Ek Industries, Inc." in the small town of Guilford, Connecticut about 20 miles south-east of Hamden.

Very little information is available about this period of John Ek Knives.

[GFC] GFC

Guaranteed Forever Certificate - I first thought this rare certificate from was from John Ek's earliest knife business during WW-II. However, I have now learned that "John Ek Industries, Inc." in Guilford, Connecticut was John Ek's post WW-II business.

The certificate states that as long as a John Ek knife was not abused, a returned knife would be put in good order and the only charge would be 50 cents for return postage.

MIAMI FL 54th. St. - 1949 -1968

I have only seen 3 versions of the John Ek Miami Cover "Your Silent Partner" (SP) booklets and only several small paper price lists.

Only one of the Miami Cover SP booklets is dated. The other two take a bit of effort to date (See the individual booklet details). The SP19 is a 1966 version, the SP19.5 is a late 1976 or early 1977 version and was issued sometime after John Ek's death in Oct. 1976. The third version SP20 is a 1980 version and is so dated.

There are several different colored covers on the booklets as noted below.

[SP Miami 1st.] [SP Miami 1st.] [SP Hamden 1st.] SP19

Silent Partner #19 - This is the first printing of the Miami SP booklets. The size is 4 x 6-1/4 inches and contains 28 pages. On page 2 it states it is the 19th. Printing. I 've never seen any SP booklets printed with a 3rd. through 18th. printing designation. I'm assuming nothing was changed and all SP 3rd. through 18th. printings were all reprints of the 2nd. printing of August 1944.

SP19 is not dated but again on page 2 it states "Now, 25 years after the first Commando Knife ....". So 1941 plus 25 gives a 1966 date. I have noted 3 different cover colors, black ink on peach paper, black ink on green paper and black ink on cream paper. Since all three cover versions have identical internal pages, I only scanned the one with black ink on peach paper.

The SP19 booklet pages differ from the Hamden SP1/SP2 booklets in many ways. The front covers of the Miami SP booklets have a distinctive "picture frame" border. There are 28 pages rather than the Hamden SP booklet's 24 pages. Only 7 pages, pages 3-9 of the Miami booklets, are identical to pages 7-11 and 14-15 of the Hamden SP2 booklets.

Note also the many changes in style or model numbers of knives. The second half of the booklet shows pictures and descriptions of 12 different knife styles and 2 different style pistol wallet holsters. The "Style" numbers 1 through 12 are named: 1-Commando Combat, 2-Ranger Combat, 3-Jungle Fighting Knife with Hilt, 4-Jungle Fighting Knife, 5-Army Occupational, 6-Patton Occupational, 7-Survival Chopper, 8-Survival Skin Diver, 9-Floating Knife, 10-Professional Throwing Knives (Set of 3), 11-Utility Knife and 12-Pen Knife - Secret Agent. The 2 different style wallet holsters are the WHD for derringers and the WHA for small simi-automatic pistols.

Basically the changes in knife styles are as follows:
Miami Styles 1 & 2 are the same as Hamden Styles 1 & 2
Miami Styles 3 & 4 are the same as Hamden Styles 6 & 7
Miami Style 5 is the same as Hamden Style 9
Miami Style 6 is the same as the non-catalog Hamden Style 11
Miami Style 7 is new
Miami Style 8 is new
Miami Style 9 is the same as Hamden Style 10
Miami Style 10 is new
Miami Style 11 is new
Miami Style 12 is new

And Hamden Styles 3, 4, 5 and 8 (all with bolo type handles) were discontinued.

These changes cause much confusion when comparing Hamden and Miami knife models.

Also note that the SP19 booklet was used at both the Miami 54th. St. location and the North Miami Seminole Gun Shop at the 119th St. location.

The SP19 displayed here has the 3214 N. W. 54th St. Miami address on page 1 as well as the rear cover. I've also noted copies that still have the 54th. St. address on page 1 but have the 1543 N. W. 119th. St. North Miami address printed on the rear cover.

[PL1966-1] [PL1966-2] PL1966

Price Lists 1 Jan. 1966 - There are 2 price lists that are dated January 1, 1966. The first one on the left is the earlier version. The one on the right is a later version as evidenced by higher prices for several knives.

There are many differences between the two lists, even differences in the style names and numbering. It's odd that the second version doesn't have a more recent date.

I believe the price list on the left was only used for a short time. I base this on all the "Chopper" knives I've noted were stamped 7 and all "Utility" knives were stamped 11. A couple of interesting items on the left list are styles 11, 12, 13 and 14 which were non-Ek knives and the addition of two wallet holsters (Styles WHD & WHA) and a shoulder rig (Style SR).

An interesting item on the right list is a Presentation Box (Style PB). It must have been offered for only a short time as this is the only Price List that I know that lists the PB. I have never encountered one of these boxes. From the price of $15. I would guess the Miami box was probably a wooden display box.

[Miami Ad] MIAMIAD

Miami Ad - This ad was posted in the January 1967 edition of Guns&Ammo on pg. 75. Unknown size. Note the "Dept. GA" in the address. Typically the department indicated the magazine or newspaper that displayed the ad. This helps any company determine how effective their advertising is in various publications.

Note the reference to the 1944-1966 Silent Partner booklet. This supports my belief that although there may have been 18 printings before the 19th., the 2nd. through the 18th. must have been identical with no printing date change.

NORTH MIAMI FL - 119th. St. SEMINOLE GUN SHOP - 1968-1978

[PL1971] PL1971

Price List June 1, 1971 - This price list is very similar to the 2nd. 1966 price list. Note that the address has changed with the move to 1547 119th. St. North Miami.

The differences between the two lists include price increases on most knives. Again style 12 Pen Knife - "Secret Agent" is a non Ek knife. The Presentation Box (Style PB) as well as the personal Engraving (Style EG) were also eliminated.

[WPL1971] WPL1971

Wholesale Price List June 1, 1971 - This is a wholesale price list intended for authorized dealers and distributors. It has the same list of styles as the PL1971 retail price list with the exception of the styles 7, 8 & 9 that were not offered at the wholesale prices. The wholesale price of the style 11 Utility knife was increased $5.00 as well.

Note that 12 knives had to be ordered in order to qualify for the discounted prices.

[PL1975] PL1975

Price List January 1, 1975 - This price list is very similar to the 1971 price list. Note that for the first time Gary Ek's name appears on the price list. Gary started helping his father John in 1971. Note also the address change from the PL1971'S 1547 119th. Street to 1543 119th. Street.

The differences between the 1975 vs the 1971 lists include rather large price increases on most items. The Style 12 Pen Knife - "Secret Agent" was eliminated. Delivery times are quoted as 8-12 weeks. The name "John Ek Commando Knives" was changed to "Ek Custom Knives" and the crossed knives in a box logo was changed to a single knife.

[PL1976] PL1976

Price List January 1, 1976 - This price list is very similar to the 1975 price list. Note Gary Ek / Maker appears on the price list.

The differences between the 1976 vs the 1975 lists include price increases on most items. Delivery times are now quoted quoted as 8-52 weeks. The Style 12 Pen Knife - "Secret Agent" was reintroduced. The crossed knives in a box logo was reintroduced.

[REGCARD] [REGCARD] REGCARD

Registration Card - This post card was used to register a Miami era John Ek knife. It would be filled out by the dealer and/or user and mailed back to the Seminole Gun Shop.

I believe these cards superseded the paper "Certificate Of Registry" forms found at the rear of the Silent Partner booklets.

[BFJOHN2]
BFJOHN

Business Flyer John - This is a business flyer advertising the Seminole Gun Shop at the 119th. Street address. The bottom portion contains an exact replica of a Florida 1863 $3.00 Bank Note.

The SEMINOLE GUN SHOP CORPORATION incorporated on July 16, 1968. The business address is listed as 1541 119th. St. P.O. BOX 61-1147 North Miami, FLA.

There was a second registration of SEMINOLE GUN SHOP 95 INC incorporated on July 8, 1970. The business address is listed as John Ek's home address in North Miami, FLA.

This flyer would have been used in the 1968-1976 time period.

[BF2SHOPS]

[BF2SHOPS]
BF2SHOPS

Business Flyer 2 Shops - This is a business flyer advertising both the Seminole Gun Shop and Rebel Gun Shop. The reverse contains an exact replica of a Florida 1863 $3.00 Bank Note.

I don't know if John Ek had any ownership of the Rebel Gun Shop.

[BCJOHN] BCJOHN

Business Card John - This is a business card advertising the Seminole Gun Shop at the 119th. Street address. This card would have been used in the 1968-1976 time period.

[BFGARY1]

[BFGARY2]
BFGARY

Business Flyer Gary - This is a business flyer advertising Ek Custom Knives. Gary had been helping make knives since 1971. Note also the address change from the 1541 119th. Street to 1543 119th. Street. Gary could have been operating out of a building next to the Seminole Gun Shop. The bottom portion contains an exact replica of a Florida 1863 $3.00 Bank Note.

Judging from the date of the Price List of 1975 this flyer would have been used in the 1975-1976 time period. The Corporation registration for the Seminole Gun Shop was canceled for non-payment on September 3, 1976. Gary's father John died 2 months later.

[BCGARY] BCGARY

Business Card Gary - This is a business card advertising Ek Custom Knives at the 119th. Street address. Gary had been helping make knives since 1971. His father John may have been letting Gary take over more of the Ek Knives business.

Judging from the date of the Price List of 1975 (which used this same card image at the bottom) this card would have been used in the 1975-1976 time period. The Corporation registration was canceled for non-payment on September 3, 1976. John Ek died 2 month later.

[ORD1973] ORD1973

Order 1973 - Seminole Gun Shop order for two Schrade #8354 knives, a Pocket? knife and a Miami John Ek style 1 knife serial 312.

[ORD1976-1] [ORD1976-2] [ORD1976-3] [ORD1976-4] ORD1976

Order 1976 - Read left to right, these 4 pages document an order for a Miami John Ek style 1 knife serial 565 and a style SR shoulder rig. The bank information has been blanked for obvious reasons.

The last page indicates the person was somewhat dismayed by the simple design of the shoulder rig. It consists of two leather straps each connected at one end by snaps to a 2 inch piece of leather and at the other ends by a buckle.

To use, I believe you just undo one of the snaps, put the 2 inch leather piece through the knife sheath's belt loop and redo the snap. Then put the loop over your head onto one shoulder with the knife hanging against the body underneath the opposite arm. The buckle allows adjusting for differences in body shape and desired knife position.

[Gun Shop] GUNSHOP

Gun Shop - A picture of the Seminole Gun Shop on 119th. St. North Miami. Unknown date.

[Cased Knives] CASEDKNIVES

Cased Knives - A picture of an Ek Knife case in the Seminole Gun Shop on 119th. St. North Miami, FLA. Unknown date.

The case includes 9 knives, all having the Miami ink stamp. Knives from left to right: #11 Utility, #7 Chopper, #8 Skin Diver, #6 Patton Occupational, #5 Army Occupational, #4 Jungle Combat D/E, #3 Jungle Combat S/E, #2 Ranger Combat D/E, #1 Commando Combat S/E. If you zoom in on the large picture you can actually read some of the serial numbers. Most look to be the early numeric 3 digit small number type.

[NorthMiami Ad] NMIAMIAD

North Miami Ad - This ad was posted in the Shotgun News sometime in the 1970's. Unknown size. If I interpret this ad correctly, Ek was offering finished Hamden blades and a sheath along with a block of walnut for handles. Basically a partially finished kit knife.

Note the address is 1547 rather than 1541. Reason unknown.

[Logo Foil]

[Logo Foil]
LOGOFOIL

Logo Foil - This is a piece of silver foil with adhesive backing. It was produced by Fasson Products of Plainsville, Ohio. Fasson started in 1954 and are still in business today. The size is 1-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches H x L. The red bordered logo is 1 x 2-1/4 inches.

There are two views, the top showing the actual scratches and reflections and the second cleaned up so the logo is clearer.

As you may know, Ek stamped some Miami blades but most just had an ink stamp on the blade. The ink would rub off with little handling. This foil may have been a sample that was being evaluated to replace the ink stamp.

I have only seen the logo foil used on one display. A green, wooden, edged-shield on which was mounted two Ek Knives, a non-catalog Hamden Style 11, serial P390 and a Miami Style 2 serial 100. But I've seen another mention of the foil refering to it as a "Bumper Sticker".

[SP Miami 2nd.] SP19.5

Silent Partner 19.5 - This is the second printing of the Miami SP booklets. The size is 4 x 6-1/4 inches and contains 28 pages. It is not specifically dated but from the content was printed sometime after John Eks death in Oct. 1976. So it would probably be a late 1976 or 1977 printing.

The SP19.5 booklet differs from the SP19 printing as follows:

Inside front cover: Adds the following to the last paragraph after the word Forces. ", AND MY SON, "GARY" FOR HIS HANDCRAFTMENSHIP - - - - - - - AND DESIGNING.
PAGE 1: Robert Ek name removed from top and replaced by "John Ek Commando Knife Since 1941". The Ek Brothers and 54th. street address at the bottom are replaced with a paragraph by Gary Ek concerning the death of his father.
PAGE 2: John and Robert Ek changed to John Ek.
PAGES 3-28 are identical
INSIDE REAR COVER: Handling charge of $2.00 blanked out. Last line changed from "John and Robert Ek" to"John Ek"
OUTSIDE REAR COVER: Removes the address and substitutes a P.O. Box address.

PEMBROKE PARK FL - 1976-1980

[PL1978] PL1978

Price List January 1, 1978 - This price list is the first noted for Gary Ek's knife business "House of Ek" in Pembroke Park, Florida.

The first 12 styles are the same as previously noted on the 1976 price list with a several style names altered. The last 6 styles, 13 - Flying Moon, 14 - Eagles Claw, 15 - 2506 Brigade Special, 16 - 2506 Brigade, 17 - Special WW-II Original and 18 - Special WW-II John Ek Commemorative are additions.

Note that on several of the first 12 styles, a "Presentation Grade" was available at additional cost. Styles 15 through 18 were only available in "Presentation Grade".

This price list also has the first mention of micarta as an option for handle material.

[INV1978] INV1978

Invoice of December 30, 1978 - This invoice is for a style 2 without serial number. Note that the sale price is less than that stated in the PL1978 price list.

SAINT AUGUSTINE, FL - 1980-1982

[SP Miami 3rd.] SP20

Silent Partner 20 - This is the third printing of the Miami SP booklets. The size is 4 x 6-1/4 inches and contains 28 pages. It is dated 1980 and it was printed 4 years after the move to St. Augustine and 2 years before the sale and move to Richmond. I have only noted one color, black ink on cream paper.

The SP20 booklet is similar to but differs from the SP19 printing as follows:

INSIDE FRONT COVER: The last paragraph "This Handbook is dedicated to our Dad, Robert Ek, Sr., and the Fighting Men of the United States Armed Forces" was removed
PAGE 1: Many differences with a dedication by Gary W. Ek.
PAGES 2-24: Identical to the SP19 booklet.
PAGE 25-26: All New. Some of the key items are: Gary stopped taking deposits or advance payments on orders. Delivery times are stated to be between 2 and 18 months. Possibility of price changes. Description of blade steel and handles material added. And on page 26 the location, Saint Augustine Fla. is mentioned.
PAGE 27: Blank page
PAGE 28: Identical
INSIDE REAR COVER: Handling charge of $2.00 is restored but obviously a mistake as $2.00 is insufficient for a repair let alone a replacement. Last line changed from "John and Robert Ek" to"John & Gary Ek"
OUTSIDE REAR COVER: Removes Ek Company address completely.

[PL1980] PL1980

Price List January 1, 1980 - This price list is the second noted for Gary Ek's knife business "House of Ek".

The first 12 styles are the same as previously noted on the PL1978 price list. The Style 13 - Flying Moon was retained. The PL1978's 14 - Eagles Claw, 15 - 2506 Brigade Special, 16 - 2506 Brigade, 17 - Special WW-II Original and 18 - Special WW-II John Ek Commemorative, were all discontinued. The 7 - Chopper is listed but not offered. A "Presentation Finish" was available on 11 out of the 13 styles again at additional cost.

A new style name J.E. is offered. This seems to be the same knife as the style 18 from the PL1978 list. Price not listed but available upon request.

[BF1980] BF1980

Business Flyer 1980 - This business flier advertised Gary Ek's knife business "House of Ek" at a new location, 14C St. George Street. Date is approximate. Size is 8-1/2 x 5-1/2 inches.

RICHMOND, VA - N. LOMBARDY ST. - 1982-1997

There are numerous documents and paperwork associated with Richmond era knives.

[QUERY5/146-1] [QUERY5/146-2] QUERY5/146

QUERY 1976 - Read left to right, these 2 pages document a query about a Miami John Ek style 5 knife serial 146.

The knife was given to Eric E. Brooker by John Ek at the Seminole Gun Shop while Mr. Brooker was working at Colt Firearms. Although Mr. Brooker couldn't remember the year, it had to be during the period of 1968 and 1976.

Joe Cusumano, General Manager of the Ek Knife Company in Richmond, attempted to research the knife but couldn't find a registration card for the knife.

[Gray SP 1987-1] [Tan SP 1987-2] SP1987

Silent Partner 1987 - This is the first of the Richmond versions of the "Your Silent Partner" booklet. The size is 3 x 4-1/2 inches and contains 20 pages although pages are not numbered. It is dated 1987 on page 1. I have noted 2 different cover colors, tan and gray, with gray being the most common. Since both color versions have identical pages, I only scanned the gray one.

The first three pages of the booklet consists of a title page, a liability page and a dedication page followed by three chapters. The first chapter "John Ek: A Legend In Knife Making" covers the history of Ek Knives. Chapter 2 covers the "Care and Maintenance of Ek Commando Knives" with photos of some of the Richmond knives. Chapter 3 "Knife Fighting" consists of only 2 pages.

The 1987 SP booklets are the fewest that I've noted. They can be found in the Black Telescope Boxes of the early Richmond knives.

[SP 1988] SP1988

Silent Partner 1988 - This is the second version of the Richmond "Your silent Partner" booklet. The size is 3 x 4-1/2 inches and contains 20 pages although pages are not numbered. It is dated 1988 on page 1. I have noted only one cover color, gray.

There are a few differences in the SP1988 compared to the SP1987. The second version uses a slightly smaller font size which shifts some sentences to the previous page. The first 3 pages are the same. Chapter 1 is the same. Chapter 2 has a few wording changes, doesn't display the "P" series knives and shows the grommeted web and leather sheaths in their place. Chapter 3 is the same.

These 1988 SP booklets are the most common and can be found in the Black Telescope Boxes as well as some of the Black Flap Boxes of the early Richmond knives.

[SP Hamden 1st.] SP1990

Silent Partner 1990 - This is the third version of the Richmond "Your silent Partner" booklet. The size is 3 x 4-1/2 inches and contains 20 pages although pages are not numbered. It is dated 1990 on page 1. I have noted only one cover color, gray.

Again there are a few differences in the SP1990 compared to the SP1988. The third version uses a slightly different font size which shifts some sentences to the previous page. The first 3 pages are the same. Chapter 1 is the same. Chapter 2 has a few wording changes, shows a model 5 blade with paragrip handle instead of the model 3, and shows a paragrip model 3 between the sheaths. The two photos showing how to hold your knife show differences in the grip in both photos. Chapter 3 is the same.

These 1990 SP booklets are less common than the 1988 SP Booklets and can be found in the Black Telescope and Black Flap Boxes of the early Richmond knives as well as some of the Brown Flap boxes of the Desert Patrol knives.

[Cat Black] [Cat Red] CATBLACK

Black Catalog - This Richmond catalog can be found in two colors and two sizes. The larger size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches. The smaller size is 5-1/2 x 7-1/8. All catalogs have 8 pages including front and rear covers.

The first version is black & white. The second has a red hue on the cover and all the military photos and the section titles are all in bright red. Except for color and size, all catalogs have identical content. The catalogs are undated but they display the P series knives so I estimate the print date was around the early to mid 1980's. Since both color versions have identical pages, I only scanned the black one.

The Small Black Catalogs in the 5-1/2 x 7-1/8 inch size can be found in the black telescope boxes of the earlier Richmond knives. The larger catalogs were mailed out in response to information requests.

[ NEWPRICES1987] NEWPRICES1987

Except for size, both catalogs are identical. The catalogs are dated 1991. The gold color commemorates the 50th. Anniversary of Ek Commando Knives.

This catalog introduces a large group of new Ek knives. Introduced are the Ek "Desert Patrol" models DP-3, DP-4, DP-5 and DP-6, the "Jungle Patrol" models JP-3, JP-4, JP-5 and JP-6, the "SECRET AGENT" Boot Knife, the "DESERT PATROL JR." Boot Knife, the "DESERT WARRIOR", the "AUSTRALIAN COMMANDO", the "PROFESSIONAL THROWER" as well as 3 new H.G. Long & Co. knives.

The list includes all the Ek items available at that time with both wholesale and suggested retail prices.

[Cat Bench] CATBENCH

Benchmade Catalog - This catalog emphasizes Ek knives as being of Benchmade quality. I believe this is the last Richmond catalog printed before Blackjack took over some sales of Ek Commando knives. The catalog has 12 pages including the front and rear covers and is dated 1992.

A year after this catalog came out, Blackjack Knives Ltd. would take over manufacture of "production knives" while Richmond would continue custom commando knife-making.

A lot of the rarer Ek knives are shown in the catalog. Greater emphasis on the bowie blades is seen. Hunters, boot knives, throwers, WW-II knives, H.G. Long & Co. knives and accessories are shown.

[Gunner] GUNNER

Gunner Insert - This single page catalog insert is for the "Gunner" models with checkered walnut grips. Size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches single sided on glossy paper.

Grips/Blades Options Insert - This single page catalog insert shows 6 grip options on one side of the sheet and 4 blade options models on the opposite side. Size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches double sided on glossy paper.

This insert is one of the few items documenting the Oak Stamina Wood and Stag handle options.

Since it shows the Ek Bowie model which was introduced in 1991, it was used for some period after 1991.

[LHT] LHT

Large Hang Tag - This hang tag, sometimes found with a string attached is found in many of the Richmond boxes. Size is 2-3/4 X 3 inches folded. Printed in two colors on glossy paper.

[BCJC] BCJC

Business Card Joseph Cusumano - This card was used by Joe while he was General Manager of the Ek Knife Company. Size is 3-1/2 x 2 inches. Printed in blue Ink on a white card.

I have other documentation that showed Joe was General Manager in early 1987. I don't know the entire time span he was GM.

[BBL 1] [BBL 2] [BBL 3] BBL

Blank Business Letters - There were three business letters that were used at the Richmond North Lombardy address. They were used for the various thank you, congratulations, invoice and delivery ticket letters included with Ek knives. All are 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Printed in blue Ink on white paper.

On the left is the earliest letter with simple crossed Ek knives. In the middle is the letter used before the Gulf War and has the Three War Logo. On the right has the Four War Logo and I believe is the last letter used at the North Lombardy address.

[OF 79] [OF 99] OF

Order Forms - These order forms were included with knives from the Richmond North Lombardy address. Both are 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Printed in blue and red ink on white paper. Neither is dated but must be after 1985 when the Commemorative Series was introduced.

On the left is an earlier form. On the right is a later form. The later form had price increases on the order of 15-25% for all the knives (except the Commemorative Series) as well as an increase in the shipping cost. Otherwise they are identical.

Some of these forms can also be found in black and white copys.

[DT 1986] [DT 1987] DT

Delivery Tickets - These order delivery forms were included with knives from the Richmond North Lombardy address. All are 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Printed in blue Ink on white paper with information in black type.

[LBE2] LBE2

Large Business Envelope 2- These envelopes were used in the Richmond II era to ship catalogs to customers. Size is 12 X 9 inches. Printed in blue ink on large white envelope.

Note the difference of the 4 Wars logo and it's different location on the envelope from the Richmond LBE envelope.

DFL

Dear Friend Letters - These thank you letters were included with knives or catalog requests from the Richmond North Lombardy address. All are 8-1/2 x 11 inches. Printed in blue or black ink on white paper.

On the left is one of the earliest letters with the simple crossed Ek knives and signed by Stuart T. Ashton IV. The next two letters are signed by Joseph Cusumano. The forth letter is signed by Vincent M. Signorelli and the fifth letter is signed by Bob Buerlien. Note the last letter has the 4 Wars Logo and it's issue would be sometime in the 1991-2004 time period.

In all probability there are more versions of these letters.

EK COMMANDO KNIFE COLLECTOR'S CLUB - RICHMOND, VA

The Ek Commando Knife Collector's Club also known as The Ek Knife Collector's Club, was a club created by Robert A. Buerlein who was the President of the Ek Commando Knife Company. It was formed to create more interest in the collection of Ek knives and thereby increase sales for the Ek Knife Company.

The club sold various special edition knives such as the Murphy WW-II Comemorative and the 5 different Murphy SOG models as well as other knives. None of those knives are documented on this site.

As far as I know, the only classic Ek knife offered was:

BLACKJACK - EFFINGHAM, IL - 1993-1995

[BJ 1993 Cat] BJCAT1993

Blackjack 1993 Catalog - This is the first Blackjack catalog and is of the fold out type. Size is 3-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches folded and opened measures 14 x 17 inches. This catalog is double sided and printed in color on glossy paper.

The catalog pictures over 40 knives including 36 Blackjacks, 3 Beckers, one Hoffman Rescue, as well as two axes and a sword but the catalog doesn't include any John Ek knives.

I do not have a copy of this catalog and the pdf file shows only poor quality images of both sides.

[BJ 1994 Cat] BJCAT1994

Blackjack 1994 Catalog - This is 20 page color catalog. Size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches. It is dated 1994 on the cover.

The catalog picture and give specifications and prices for 56 knives made under the Blackjack, John Ek, Cripple Creek, BK&T, H.G. Long, and Hoffman Design brands.

This is the second full color Blackjack catalog.

[BJ 1995 Cat] BJCAT1995

Blackjack 1995 Catalog - This is a fold out color catalog. Size is 4-1/4 x 8-1/2 inches folded and opened measures 21 x 17 inches and is double sided. It is dated 1995.

When folded out, there are 20 pannels that picture and give specifications and prices for 63 knives made under the Blackjack, John Ek, Cripple Creek, BK&T, H.G. Long, and Hoffman Design brands.

This is the last of the Blackjack catalogs that show any Ek knife information.

[BJDPL1994] BJDPL1994

Blackjack Dealers Price List 1994 - This is a dealer price list and order form for the 1994 year. The size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches printed in blue ink on white paper. The list has 4 pages and is simply dated 1994.

The list includes BlackJack, BK&T, Hoffman Design as well as all Ek items available at that time. Both dealer and suggested retail prices are listed for all knives.

[BJDPL1995A] BJDPL1995A

Blackjack Dealers Price List 1995 - This is a dealer price list and order form for the 1995 year. The size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches printed in blue ink on white paper. The list has 4 pages and is simply dated 1995.

Very similar to the 1994 Dealers Price list, the 1995 list includes BlackJack, BK&T, Hoffman Design as well as all Ek items available at that time. Note a 30% increase in both the dealer and suggested retail prices are for the Ek model knives.

[BJDPL1995B] BJDPL1995B

Blackjack Dealers Price List 1995B - This is a second dealer price list and order form for the 1995 year. The size is 8-1/2 x 11 inches printed in black ink on white paper. The list has 3 pages and is simply dated 1995.

This second 1995 list includes BlackJack, BK&T, Hoffman Design and Cripple Creek and all Ek models available at that time. As well as listing the retail and dealer prices, volume dealer prices are also listed.

This is an interesting price list. The first page shows Blackjack was unsatisfied with the current Ek brand knives and planned to re-introduce them in a better quality model sometime in the future. At the same time they wanted to rid themselves of the current models. Retail and dealer prices remained the same while additional discounts were given to volume dealers. As an extra incentive, volume dealer prices for the five PB and five PG paracord wrap models were offered for $35. each. Of course the redesign of the Ek knife line never came to pass as Blackjack's internal conflicts caused them to limp along until they declared bankrupsy in 1997.

[ITP] [ITP2] ITP

Inspection Tag Paper - Small piece of paper found in many Blackjack Ek knife boxes. Size is roughly 1-3/4 x 1 inch. Almost all show just the month and day and inspectors initials.

I've only noted one tag with a year on these inspection tags.

[HPP] HPP

Handle Promise Paper - Found with the Diver/UDT (N-11 UDT) knives with micarta handles. Size is 8-1/2 x 1-3/8 inches.

At the turnover, Richmond didn't supply the rubber handle molds to Blackjack. Initially, Blackjack planned to have a mold made. Later the decision was made not to continue offering N-11 UDT, so no further rubber handles were made.
