HAMDEN CT SHEATHS

There are a number of sheaths that are found with Hamden Ek Commando Knives. Most are period sheaths of various kinds but many are not Hamden issue and some modern reproductions will also be encountered.

Most Hamden Ek knife sheaths don't have any identification marking at all. So at times it is difficult to determine if a sheath is original Hamden issue.

Also any attempt to try to determine if a sheath was originally matched to an Ek Hamden knife will be met with frustration. Over such a long period of time, sheaths have been swapped or later sheaths added to a knife whose original sheath may have been lost or badly damaged.

The best method is to find a knife and sheath "Mint in the Box". This method is not much help with Hamden as I am aware of only three such knives.

Another method is to determine if the amount of wear of the sheath is consistent with the wear on the knife.

If rivets are present on the sheaths they can be used to determine period sheaths from modern or reproduction sheaths. That is, the type of rivets used and/or the method of peening used to set the rivets.

Rivet Types:

One Piece Tubular - Starred Peen - Also known as hollow rivets. The setting tool has radial teeth that cause the end of the tubular rivet to split into a starburst shape.

One Piece Split - Curled Peen - Also known as bifurcated rivets. The setting tool has a concave surface that causes the two legs of the split rivet to curl back into the leather.

One Piece Tubular - Flared Peen - Also known as hollow rivets. The setting tool has a convex surface that causes the tubular rivet to flair out evenly without splitting.

Two Piece Double Cap - These two piece rivets fit one inside the other and are assembled with two concave setting tools.

I believe all original Hamden sheaths have rivets of either the One Piece Tubular Starred Peen type or the One Piece Split - Curled Peen type.

[Hamden Early Slip Type] Photo: ebay 11/2012
HAMDEN EARLY SLIP: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Spear Point; Narrow Belt Loop on rear; 1 Rivet; One Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the early issue of the original issue slip sheath. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, a narrow belt loop on the rear and no throat rivets.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

These sheaths can also be seen in the "YOUR SILENT PARTNER" booklets.

[Hamden Later Slip]
HAMDEN LATER SLIP: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 4 Starred Rivets; Some with Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the later issue of the original slip sheath and has a more robust design. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, with the rear portion folded back to form a belt loop and most have 4 starred rivets, 2 at mid-sheath to fasten down the belt loop portion and 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area. Occasonally a sheath will be observed with a 5th. rivet at the sheath tip.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

Almost all of the rivets of these original sheaths are of the One Piece Tubular - Starred Peen type.

This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Hamden Early Wide Slip] Photo: ebay chrissiler
HAMDEN EARLY WIDE TOP SLIP: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type with Wide Throat; Spear Point; Narrow Belt Loop on rear; No Rivets; One Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the early issue of the wide top slip sheath. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, a narrow belt loop on the rear and no throat rivets. They are similar to the early issue of the slip sheath but have a wider throat to accommodate the bolo handles of the 3, 4 and 5 style knives.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

These sheaths can also be seen in the "YOUR SILENT PARTNER" booklets.

This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

HAMDEN LATER WIDE TOP SLIP: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type with Wide Throat; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 4 Starred Rivets; Some with Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the later issue of the wide top slip sheath. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, a narrow belt loop on the rear and 2 throat rivets. They are the same as the early issue of the wide slip sheath, have the wider throat to accommodate the bolo handles of the 3, 4 and 5 style knives but have 2 rivets to reinforce the throat area.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

I've noted very few of these sheaths The majority are the early wide slip type without rivets at the throat. This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Hamden Rnd. Top Narrow Waist] Photo: Lasky Collection
HAMDEN ROUND TOP NARROW WAIST: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Retention Strap Type; Spear Point; Belt Slots; 7 Split Rivets; No Leg Tie Hole

This type sheath is the second of two frequently encountered original sheaths. It is a two piece type with sewn lower portion, reinforced with 7 split rivets and has a leather strap with metal snap fastener to retain the knife in the sheath.

Records of two Hamden knives in boxes show the knives paired with this type sheath but I am unsure if this sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Hamden Early Laced Para Slip] Photo: ebay kaasu111
HAMDEN EARLY LACED PARA SLIP: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Boot Shape; Narrow Belt Loop; Single Rawhide Laced Edge; 2 Rivets; No Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the early issue of the laced para slip sheath and used exclusively for the Style 8 Paratrooper knife. It is a two piece sheath with the edges laced with a single rawhide tie. It has a narrow belt loop on the rear. There are just 2 rivets used to fasten the belt loop.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Hamden Later Laced Para Slip] Photo: ebay kaasu111
HAMDEN LATER LACED PARA SLIP: Original Issue; Brown or Black Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Boot Shape; Narrow Belt Loop; Single Rawhide Laced Edge; 9-10 Rivets; No Leg Tie Hole

This sheath is the later issue of the laced para slip sheath and used exclusively for the Style 8 Paratrooper knife. It is a two piece sheath with the edges laced with a single rawhide tie. It has a narrow belt loop on the rear fastened with 2 rivets. 7 to 8 additional rivets are used to reinforce the lower half of the sheath.

The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

This sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Hamden Short Round Top Straight Back] Photo: ebay 10/2016
HAMDEN SHORT ROUND TOP STRAIGHT BACK: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Retention Strap Type; Straight Back; Belt Slots; 6-7 Split Rivets; No Leg Tie Hole

This type sheath was used for most of the non-catalog Style 5 Short knives. It is a two piece type with sewn lower portion, reinforced with 6-7 split rivets. It has belt slots and a leather strap with metal snap fastener to retain the knife in the sheath.

Some of these sheaths were sold by KENNEDY BROS. ARMS CO. of St. Paul Minnesota and are so stamped at the very top of the handle area on the front face. I don't believe this sheath is unique to John Ek Knives.

[Deluxe Leather Sheath]
HAMDEN FLOATING KNIFE DELUXE LEATHER SHEATH: Original Issue; Details Unknown;

This sheath is one of two sheaths issued with the Style 10 Floating Knife.

It is described in the Hamden "Your Silent Partner" booklets as a "Deluxe Leather Sheath". None of the other style knives have their sheaths described as "Deluxe" so I'm assuming it was in some way different from other Ek sheaths.

I have never observed one of these sheaths and suspect very few were made.

[Plastek Sheath]
HAMDEN FLOATING KNIFE PLASTEK SHEATH: Original Issue; Details Unknown;

This sheath is one of two sheaths issued with the Style 10 Floating Knife.

It is described in the Hamden "Your Silent Partner" booklets as a "new Plastek sheath". I'm assuming the sheath was made of some type of plastic.

I have never observed one of these sheaths and suspect very few were made.

HAMDEN PERIOD MISCELANEOUS: Unknown Origin; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Retention Type; Misc. Shapes; Belt Loop or Belt Slots; 7-8 Split Rivets;

I have observed each of these three sheaths with more than one Hamden knife but am unsure of their original source.

[Hamden Repro Slip 1]
Photo: ebay lokityr
HAMDEN REPRO SLIP #1: Reproduction; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 4 Flared Rivets; Two Leg Tie Holes

This type sheath is the first of two frequently encountered slip sheaths that I believe are reproduction sheaths. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, with the rear portion folded back to form a belt loop and 4 rivets, 2 to fasten down the belt loop portion and 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area.

It is a slip type sheath, a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

The reproduction has two differences from the original. The rivets are of the One Piece Tubular - Rolled Peen type and there are 2 holes for a leg tiedown. Although some of the original slip sheaths can be found field modified with 2 holes at the sheath tip they are usually not as evenly placed as this reproduction.

But the biggest clue is the nice condition of the leather and rivets. You wouldn't expect a sheath that is over 70 years old to look so pristine.

[Hamden Repro 2]
HAMDEN REPRO SLIP #2: #1: Reproduction; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Slip Type; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 5 Double Cap Rivets; No Leg Tie Hole

This type sheath is the second of two frequently encountered slip sheaths that I believe are reproduction sheaths. It is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, with the rear portion folded back to form a belt loop and 5 rivets, 2 to fasten down the belt loop portion, 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area and 1 to reinforce the tip. There is no leg tie hole.

It is a slip type sheath, a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

The reproduction has two differences from the original. The rivets are of the Two Piece Double Cap type rather than the original and there are 5 rivets rather than the usual 4.

Another clue is the nice condition of the leather and rivets. You wouldn't expect a sheath that is over 70 years old to look so pristine.

MIAMI FL SHEATHS

In 1949 John Ek moved the Ek Knife business to Miami Florida.

None of Hamden style sheath designs were used for Miami era knives. Also none of the Miami sheaths are of the slip type. All have a leather strap with metal snap fastener to retain the knife in the sheath.

Instead two other designs were used, the major feature of each were the distinctive laced edges.

The first design, which includes almost all of the Miami sheaths, is a two piece design. The rear portion of the sheath is roughly 1-1/2 times the length of the finished sheath. The upper 1/3 of the piece in the handle area is then folded forward and secured with two rivets to form a belt loop. The second piece (lower front section) is secured to the rear piece with leather lacing. The upper portion of the sheath (belt-loop/handle area) is narrower than the sheath body and has a leather strap with snap fastener to retain the knife.

The second design is a single piece design. As with the first design, the rear portion of the sheath is roughly 1-1/2 times the length of the finished sheath. But the lower section of the single piece is twice as wide as the finished width. Again the upper 1/3 of the piece in the handle area is then folded forward and secured with two rivets to form a belt loop. The lower section is then folded over and secured with leather lacing. Again, the upper portion of the sheath (belt-loop/handle area) is narrower than the sheath body and has a leather strap with snap fastener to retain the knife.

Only three shapes were used, spear point, clip point and straight back.

As well as the lacing, the other distinctive feature of the sheaths is a decorative strip of leather on the front face of the sheath at the sheath throat. I have only noted one sheath without this throat collar piece and that sheath was with a late 400 series presentation grade knife.

Almost all of the sheaths are stamped, on the rear of the belt loop in two lines, "JOHN EK" / "COMMANDO KNIFE". Supposedly Rick's Leather Shop in Miami did a lot of the Ek sheaths under contract.

I don't know how the sheaths could be dated except with their associated knives serial numbers. But again, sheaths get swapped around on knives all the time.

Shown below are examples of most of the sheath types you will find with Miami era knives.

[Miami Black Form Fit Single Black Lace] BLACK FORM-FIT W/ SINGLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Blade-Form-Fit Face; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

This sheath looks to have had the leather form fitted to a blade. Note the raised blade area on the lower face of this sheath.

MIAMI BLACK CRINKLE W/ DOUBLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Crinkle Texture Face; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Double Black Lace Wrap;

The lower face of this sheath has a crinkle texture. It also has a double lace wrap which forms an X pattern around the edge.

MIAMI BLACK SMOOTH W/ SINGLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

The entire sheath has a smooth texture. It also has a single lace wrap which is slightly wider than that used in some of the other sheaths. An odd item on this sheath is that the rivet attaching the retention strap piece, passes through both layers of the belt loop rather that just the front piece.

MIAMI BLACK SMOOTH W/ DOUBLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Double Black Lace Wrap;

The entire sheath has a smooth texture. It also has a double lace wrap which forms an X pattern around the edge.

[Miami Black Smooth; Single Tan Lace] MIAMI BLACK SMOOTH W/ SINGLE TAN LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

The entire sheath has a smooth texture. It also has a single lace wrap. Again an odd item on this sheath is that the rivet attaching the retention strap piece, passes through both layers of the belt loop rather that just the front piece.

Note the wear on the rear of the sheath in the retention strap rivet area. It shows a burgundy color. This indicates that at least some sheaths were dyed as the raw leather color was a burgundy shade as seen on other Miami sheaths.

This sheath shows damage as the retention strap female portion of the snap fastener is missing.

[Miami Brown Smooth; Double Brown Lace] Photo: ebay older-than-dirt-2008 MIAMI BROWN SMOOTH W/ DOUBLE BROWN LACE: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Double Brown Lace Wrap;

Although well worn, the entire sheath has a smooth texture. It also has a double lace wrap which forms an X pattern around the edge.

[Miami Brown Fold; Single Brown Lace] Photo: ebay 11/2017 MIAMI BROWN FOLD W/ SINGLE BROWN LACE: Original Issue; Brown Alligator Leather; One Piece; Alligator Texture; Retention Strap; Straight Back; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Brown Lace Wrap;

Unusual Straight Back sheath with faint alligator pattern. Normally original sheaths for clip point blades were of the clip point design.

Unsure if this sheath is original to the knife due to the difference in wear between the two. The ink stamp would wear off with very little use.

[Miami Brown Smooth; Double Brown Lace] MIAMI BROWN NO COLLAR W/ DOUBLE BROWN LACE: Original Issue; Brown Leather; Two Piece; No Throat Collar; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Double Brown Lace Wrap;

This is a later sheath found with a presentation grade Miami knife with a late 400 series serial number. Note the absence of the throat collar piece.

[Miami Brown Clip Point; Single Brown Lace] Photo: ebay jumpjacket1944 MIAMI BLACK CLIP POINT W/ SINGLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Clip Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

Mint clip point sheath. It still retains the original strip of "Behr" 100 grit sandpaper looped around the handle retaining strap. The sandpaper was provided so the purchaser could customize the grip size to fit the user's hand.

[Miami Black Alligator Single Black Lace] MIAMI BLACK ALLIGATOR W/ SINGLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Black Alligator Leather; Two Piece; Alligator Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

One of several alligator sheath types. Note that on this sheath only the face is alligator. The rear piece is smooth leather.

[Miami Tan Alligator Single Brown Lace] MIAMI TAN ALLIGATOR W/ SINGLE BROWN LACE: Original Issue; Tan Alligator Leather; Two Piece; Alligator Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Brown Lace Wrap;

One of several alligator sheath types. Note that the entire sheath is alligator leather.

[Miami Burgundy Smooth; Single Black Lace] MIAMI BURGUNDY SMOOTH W/ SINGLE BLACK LACE: Original Issue; Burgundy Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Black Lace Wrap;

The entire sheath has a smooth texture.

[Miami Burgundy Short Fold; Single Tan Lace] Photo: ebay sga_pi MIAMI BURGUNDY SHORT FOLD W/ SINGLE TAN LACE: Original Issue; Burgundy Leather; One Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Straight Back; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Single Tan Lace Wrap;

This is one of several sheaths that are of the one piece foldover design. These sheaths were used for the short blade length styles 7-Chopper and 11-Utility.

[Miami Green Smooth Double Tan Lace] Photo: ebay salmon127 MIAMI GREEN SMOOTH W/ DOUBLE TAN LACE: Original Issue; Green Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Retention Strap; Spear Point; Belt Loop; 2 Rivets; Double Tan Lace Wrap;

The entire sheath has a smooth texture.

[Miami Dive]

[Sportsways]
MIAMI RUBBER DIVE: Original Issue; Rubber; Two Piece; Retention Ring; 2 Leg Straps;

This sheath was offered as an option for the Style 9 Floating Knife.

I have never come across one of these sheaths. The only image I have is a sketch from the Miami "YOUR SILENT PARTNER" booklets. However the sheath is very similar to early models of the injection molded rubber, "Ice Cream Cone" shaped dive sheaths.

A Sportsways Dive Sheath image is shown in the second picture for type comparison but note it is a single piece, probably injection molded, while the original sketch shows that the Miami sheath was probably a 2 piece sheath held together with 10 rivets.

DUE TO MY LACK OF RECORDS FOR ST. AUGUSTINE KNIVES, I'M ASSUMING THAT ST. AUGUSTINE SHEATHS ARE THE SAME OR SIMILAR TO SOME OF THE ABOVE MIAMI SHEATHS.

RICHMOND VA SHEATHS

In 1982 the Ek Knife business moved to Richmond Virginia under the leadership of Robert Buerlein. The motto was "Constant Improvement" using the best materials and precision craftsmanship.

As with Miami knives not using any of the Hamden knife sheath designs, Richmond knives did not use any of the Miami sheath designs.

All Richmond knives have spear point blades and consist of the following 4 blade Models:

Richmond Blade Model 1 - 1-1/2 edges sharpened without crossguard
Richmond Blade Model 2 - Both edges sharpened without crossguard
Richmond Blade Model 3 - 1-1/2 sharpened edges with crossguard
Richmond Blade Model 4 - Both edges sharpened with crossguard

So there was not a need for a variety of sheath shapes.

With the Richmond knives, there are two basic sheath divisions, leather sheaths and nylon web sheaths.

LEATHER: Leather sheaths were offered in the early years of Richmond. There are only three leather sheaths and all are of the same design and vary only in their color.

They are of a three piece design made with 1) a full length rear piece; 2) another half length piece in the handle area which tapers to a point and stops just inside the throat area and 3) a final front piece in the blade area. The sheath also has a welt, a strip of leather that is placed between the two outer layers of the sheath, in the blade area along the outer edge. The layers in the blade area are then stitched together except for the sheath throat. The welt protects the stitching from being cut by the sharp cutting edge of the knife. There is also stitching across the two top pieces which forms a belt loop.

There are four slots cut into the front face of the upper section into which are threaded 2 leather retention straps with Velcro closures. Some find it time consuming to withdraw the knife from the double strap retention. So you will encounter used sheaths where either one or the other of the straps is missing.

There are also holes punched into both upper sections of the sheath. Initially paracord is wound through the holes. These can be used to further secure the knife if desired. There is also paracord wrapped around the lower section of the sheath as well as more paracord pigtailed for use as a leg tie. OD colored paracord was used on all three colors of the Richmond leather sheaths.

Two of the three leather sheath colors are commonly encountered. They are the black and so-called brown (actually light tan) sheaths. A third color, a redish brown, is less common and I've only seen it pared with a very early Richmond marked WAR (Warrior) knife. Probably few were made.

NYLON WEB: The Richmond Nylon Web sheaths are made from heavy (0.125 inch thick, 2-1/4 inch wide) woven nylon webbing with a heavy, coarse, stiff weave like that used for military style canteen/pistol belts. All web sheaths are nominally 13-1/2 inches tall after completion.

There are 4 nylon web designs used in Richmond:

POINTED BOTTOM D-RING GROMMETED
POINTED BOTTOM D-RING
FLAT BOTTOM D-RING
TUBE BOTTOM

In addition there are 3 nylon web colors encountered:

BLACK
OLIVE DRAB (OD)
DESERT TAN

POINTED BOTTOM GROMMETED D-RING - I believe these sheaths to be the earliest of the Richmond web sheath designs.

The sheath starts from a single piece of nylon web that is nominally 30 inches long. First one end of the web has it's corners trimmed off at a 45 degree angle with a hot knife and the exposed edges of both ends melted to prevent unraveling. Then a 1-1/8 inch wide by 15 inch long plastic liner piece is sewn in the center of the web on the trimmed end. The trimmed end is then folded over sharply at 7-1/2 inches from the trimmed edge with the plastic pieces facing each other inside. Two pieces of narrow, thin nylon web are placed inside on either edge of the sheath and the folded portion is sewn together around the bottom and sides leaving the throat open. This forms the blade portion of the sheath. The narrow thin nylon pieces act as a welt so the knife sharp edges can't cut into the sewn stitching. The plastic liners help ease withdrawal and insertion of the knife blade and prevent snagging the blade tip on the rough nylon weave.

The long rear piece of web then has a label sewn on and is folded back to form a belt loop. It is bent back to the rear of the sheath and down to a point where it extends beyond the upper edge of the throat by approximately 1 inch. Two double cap rivets are then inserted through the 3 layers of web, one on each side of the throat and act to reinforce the throat area.

Both outside corners of the bottom of the sheath are then cut off with a hot knife at a 45 degree angle. A short piece of thin nylon strap is looped around a D-Ring and riveted to the rear of the sheath bottom to act as an anchor for a leg tie. Finally, two sections of paracord are wrapped around the sheath body, a short 2 foot section at the top in the handle area and a longer 8 foot section wrapped in the blade area. A third 3 foot section is pigtailed on the D-Ring to act as a leg tie.

These early sheaths have 6 pairs of grommets in the upper (handle area) portion of the sheath. The 2 foot length of paracord can be threaded through the holes to help further secure the knife. Later sheaths have no grommets.

POINTED BOTTOM D-RING - I believe these sheaths to be the second of the Richmond web sheath designs. Identical in construction to the Pointed Bottom Grommeted D-Ring sheaths but lack the grommets. They also lack the upper 2 foot paracord sheath wrap in the handle area. Occasionally some sheaths will be seen to have the belt loop slightly raised a bit and sewn in place such that the throat rivets only secure two layers of the nylon web rather than three.

FLAT BOTTOM D-RING - I believe these sheaths to be the third of the Richmond web sheath designs. These sheaths are again a one piece design. They are very similar to the construction of the Pointed Bottom D-Ring sheaths but have several differences. First the welt, rather than being full length, is only a short wedge-shaped piece of leather in the throat area. Second, the outside corners of the bottom of the sheath are not trimmed off.

TUBE BOTTOM - I believe these sheaths to be the fourth of the Richmond web sheath designs. These sheaths are again a one piece design and constructed almost the same way as the Flat Bottom D-Ring. The only difference is that the bottom of the sheath is not pressed flat. This forms a hollow tube at the bottom edge of the sheath. It also lacks the bottom rivet and D-Ring. Instead, a paracord leg tie can be threaded through the bottom tube of the sheath. Strangely, I have never noted a black nylon Tube Bottom sheath.

Variations you may find on the web sheaths are D-Ring size, presence or absence of the plastic lining, type of plastic lining (clear or white), length or thickness of the welt section, presence or absence of sheath labels and differences in the type of rivets. I've noted one sheath where pop-rivets were used.

Note the changes in the sheath types with time to either simplify the construction or eliminate parts. Most likely this was done in an effort to bring down the cost of the web sheaths.

[Richmond Black Leather] RICHMOND BLACK LEATHER SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Leather; Three Piece; Smooth Texture; Stitched; Double Velcro Retention Straps; Belt Loop; No Rivets; Double Paracord Wrap; Leg Tie;

This is the first of the two common leather sheaths that were used with early production of Richmond knives.

[Richmond Tan Leather] RICHMOND TAN LEATHER SHEATH: Original Issue; Tan Leather; Three Piece; Smooth Texture; Stitched; Double Velcro Retention Straps; Belt Loop; No Rivets; Double Paracord Wrap; Leg Tie;

This is the second of the two common leather sheaths that were used with early production of Richmond knives. Note that the Richmond literature and price lists refer to this sheath color as "brown"

[Richmond Burgundy Leather] RICHMOND BURGUNDY LEATHER SHEATH: Original Issue; Burgundy Leather; Three Piece; Smooth Texture; Stitched; Double Velcro Retention Straps; Belt Loop; No Rivets; Single & Double Paracord Wrap; Leg Tie;

This is the third of the leather sheaths. Identical to the previous Black and Tan sheaths but in a burgundy(red-brown) color and somewhat rare. I've only noted it being paired with one knife, an early Richmond Blade marked WAR (Warrior) knife.

[Richmond Grommet Black Web] RICHMOND BLACK WEB GROMMETED POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; 12 Grommets; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Double Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the grommeted version of the black nylon web sheath. This is the earliest web design and one of two sheath colors used with early production of Richmond knives.

[Richmond Grommet OD Web] RICHMOND OD WEB GROMMETED POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; 12 Grommets; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Double Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the grommeted version of the OD nylon web sheath. This is the earliest web design and one of two sheath colors used with early production of Richmond knives.

[Richmond PB Black Web] RICHMOND BLACK WEB POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Single Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the second version of the black nylon web sheath. Note there are no grommets. Also the upper loop of paracord has been eliminated.

[Richmond PB OD Web] RICHMOND OD WEB POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Single Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the second version of the OD nylon web sheath. Note there are no grommets. Also the upper wrap of paracord has been eliminated.

[Richmond PB Tan Web] RICHMOND TAN WEB POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Desert Tan Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Single Desert Camo Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie; No Pigtail Paracord.

This is the first of the Desert Tan nylon web sheaths. Identical in design to the Black and OD versions, these sheaths were probably made in Desert Tan to blend with the desert conditions of the Gulf War. They are found with the DESERT RECON (Desert Storm marked) knives and some DESERT WAR (Warrior) knives.

These sheaths have a lower wrap of desert camo paracord but they are all missing the leg tie paracord found on the other colors. I've also noted a few of these sheaths wrapped with OD paracord.

[Richmond FB Black Web] RICHMOND BLACK WEB FLAT BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; Single Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Single Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the third version of the black nylon web sheath. The sheath is made from a single piece and the process of trimming off the bottom corners was eliminated.

[Richmond FB OD Web] RICHMOND OD WEB FLAT BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; Single Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; Single Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the third version of the OD nylon web sheath. The sheath is made from a single piece and the process of trimming off the bottom corners was eliminated.

[Richmond TB OD Web] RICHMOND OD WEB TUBE BOTTOM SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Two Rivets; Single Paracord Wrap; Tube for Leg Tie;

This is the fourth version of the OD nylon web sheath. The sheath is made from a single piece and construction is almost the same as the Flat Bottom D-Ring sheaths. The only difference is that the bottom of the sheath is not pressed flat. This forms a hollow tube at the bottom edge. It also lacks a D-Ring. Instead, a paracord leg tie can be threaded through the bottom tube of the sheath.

Note the odd location of the Richmond tag on the lower section, rather than the normal placement on the upper section of the sheath.

[Richmond Tube Tan Web] RICHMOND TAN WEB TUBE BOTTOM SHEATH: Original Issue; Desert Tan Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Two Rivets; Single Desert Camo Paracord Wrap; Tube for Leg Tie;

This is the second version of the Desert Tan nylon web sheath.

[Richmond Black Kydex Dive] RICHMOND BLACK KYDEX DIVE SHEATH: Original Issue; Kydex Plastic; Black Color; One Piece; Molded; Snap-In Retention; 2 Plastic Leg Straps with buckles;

This is a single piece hard sheath, made of Kydex probably injection molded. Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride material commonly used for hard knife sheaths. It has two plastic leg straps with adjustable buckles.

This sheath was used exclusively for the DIVER-UDT Knife.

[Richmond Small Thrower] RICHMOND SINGLE SMALL THROWER BLACK LEATHER SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Stitched; No Retention Strap; No Rivets; Belt Loop; No Leg Tie;

Note: The throwing knives that used these sheaths were first documented in the 50th. Anniversary Gold Catalog (1991) and were called the "Professional Throwing Knife". The photo of knife and sheath are correct but the catalog describes them as being 10" long by 3/8" thick which is in error as they are smaller. This thrower is later called the "Small Throwing Knife" in the 1992 Benchmade Catalog .

The sheath is made from two pieces of black leather. The longer rear piece is bent forward to form a belt loop and extends a little lower than the top of the front piece which is sewn on. It is a slip type sheath, a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

This sheath is 9 x 2 inches (LxW) and was used exclusively for the Single Small Throwing Knife.

[Image Needed] RICHMOND SET OF THREE SMALL THROWERS SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Leather; Four Piece?; Smooth Texture; Stitched; No Retention Straps; No Rivets?; Belt Loop; No Leg Tie;

Note: The throwing knives that used these sheaths were first documented in the 50th. Anniversary Gold Catalog (1991) and were called the "Professional Throwing Knife". The photo of knife and single sheath are correct but the catalog describes them as being 10" long by 3/8" thick which is in error as they are smaller. But the thrower is later called the "Small Throwing Knife" and described correctly in the 1992 Benchmade Catalog.

The small throwing knives also came in a set of three that used a single sheath to hold the knives. I have never seen one of these sheaths and can only speculate that it too was black leather with multiple pockets.

This sheath was used exclusively for the Set of Three Small Throwing Knives.

RICHMOND SET OF SIX SMALL THROWERS CORDURA ROLL BAG: Original Issue; OD Nylon Cloth; Six Slots; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap to Secure the Roll; No Rivets; No Belt Loop; No Leg Tie;

Note: The throwing knives that used these sheaths were first documented in the 50th. Anniversary Gold Catalog (1991) and were called the "Professional Throwing Knife". But the thrower is later called the "Small Throwing Knife" and described correctly in the 1992 Benchmade Catalog. This roll bag thrower sheath is only shown in the 1992 Benchmade Catalog .

The Set of Six Throwers were issued in a roll bag made of OD Nylon cloth. The lower half of the bag has 6 sewn slots to hold the throwers. There is edging sewn around the entire edge. To secure the roll the upper half is folded over, the bag is rolled and fastened closed with a Velcro strap.

This sheath was used exclusively for the Set of Six Small Throwing Knives.

[Richmond Large Thrower] RICHMOND LARGE THROWER OD WEB SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; One Piece; Smooth Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; No Rivets; Belt Loop; No Leg Tie;

The sheath is made from a single piece of web strap that is thinner than that used for the web belt type sheaths above. It also has a smoother weave. The sheath is sewn, double stitched at the bottom and belt loop areas, has no rivets and lacks a leg tie. It has a small piece of leather in the sheath bottom so the sharp point of the thrower can't cut the stitching.

This sheath was used exclusively for the 10 inch Large Throwing Knife.

BLACKJACK EFFINGHAM IL SHEATHS

Blackjack Knives produced Ek knives and sheaths from 1993 to sometime in 1995. But unlike Richmond, Blackjack did not produce any leather sheaths for the Ek knife line and only a single type of nylon web sheath was issued with Blackjack knives. However there was at least one "Special Edition" that was issued with a Richmond leather sheath.

There were also two dive sheaths issued, one from Richmond and the second by Eagle U.S.A.

The Blackjack Nylon Web sheaths are made from 2-1/4 inch wide woven nylon webbing with a heavy, coarse, stiff weave like that used for military style canteen/pistol belts. But the thickness seems to be about 1/32 inch thinner than the 0.125 inch thick nylon web used for Richmond sheaths. Again, all web sheaths are nominally 13-1/2 inches tall after completion.

There is only one basic design of Blackjack sheaths and that is the Flat Bottom D-Ring web sheaths. The sheaths come in two colors, black and OD. However some of the "OD" sheaths are more of a pure green rather than OD in color.

Most of the Blackjack branded Ek sheaths were labeled, marked "Handmade In U.S.A." / "Ek Commando Knife Company" / "Effingham, Illinois". However a lot of the Richmond unsold sheath stock was purchased by Blackjack Knives. So some of the early Blackjack sheaths were Richmond made and some were still Richmond labeled and were issued with early Blackjack knives.

FLAT BOTTOM D-RING - This is the only sheath made by Blackjack.

The folded portion is sewn together around the bottom and sides leaving the throat open. This forms the blade portion of the sheath. Notice that no welt is used as with Richmond knives.

A short piece of thin nylon strap is looped around a D-Ring and riveted to the rear of the sheath bottom to act as an anchor for a leg tie. No paracord wrap or leg tie are seen with the Blackjack sheaths.

As with the Richmond sheaths, there are some variations found on the web sheaths including D-Ring size, type of plastic lining (clear or white), presence or absence of the throat welt section, presence or absence of sheath labels and type of rivets.

None of the Blackjack sheaths that I've seen, have any paracord wrapped on the sheath body or as a pigtailed leg tie. But some of the non paracord handled knives included a short piece as a knife wrist thong.

[Richmond FB Black Web] BLACKJACK BLACK WEB FLAT BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; No Paracord Wrap; D-Ring w/o Leg Tie;

This is the the only version of the Blackjack black nylon web sheath. The sheath is made from a single piece of webbing in the same manner as the Richmond Flat Bottom sheaths.

[Richmond FB OD Web] BLACKJACK OD WEB FLAT BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; OD Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Three Rivets; No Paracord Wrap; D-Ring w/o Leg Tie;

This is the the only version of the Blackjack OD nylon web sheath. The sheath is made from a single piece of webbing in the same manner as the Richmond Flat Bottom sheaths.

[Richmond Black Kydex Dive] BLACKJACK BLACK KYDEX DIVE SHEATH: Richmond Original Issue; Kydex Plastic; Black Color; One Piece; Molded; Snap-In Retention; 2 Plastic Leg Straps with buckles;

The Richmond DIVER-UDT Knives purchased from Richmond were renamed the N-11 UDT by Blackjack. The knives were marked "MADE IN U.S.A." / "EFFINGHAM, IL" but were part of the stock purchased from Richmond. These sheaths were also part of the stock purchase.

This is a single piece hard sheath, made of Kydex probably injection molded. Kydex is a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride material commonly used for hard knife sheaths. It has two plastic leg straps with adjustable buckles.

This is the first of two sheaths Blackjack used for the N-11 UDT Knife.

[Blackjack Eagle Dive] BLACKJACK BLACK NYLON EAGLE DIVE SHEATH: Eagle Brand Original Issue; Cordura Nylon; Black Color; Hard Plastic Blade Liner; Multiple Pieces; Belt Loop; Stitched; Retention Strap; Paracord Leg Tie;

The Richmond DIVER-UDT Knives purchased from Richmond were renamed the N-11 UDT by Blackjack. The knives were marked "MADE IN U.S.A." / "EFFINGHAM, IL" but were part of the stock purchased from Richmond.

When Blackjack ran out of the original Black Kydex Dive Sheaths obtained in the stock from Richmond, they purchased black nylon EAGLE U.S.A. brand sheaths to issue with the remaining N-11 UDT knives.

This is a well constructed soft sheath made of Cordura nylon. It includes a hard plastic blade liner. The sheath has a belt loop. There are 2 nylon tabs on the sheath rear and one on the sheath face. These could be used to fasten a cord to the dive knife to prevent loss. There are 5 grommets on the sheath, 2 in the handle area, 2 for the leg tie and 1 acting as a drain hole. The sheath edges are nicely finished with a stitched nylon binding.

This is the second of two sheaths Blackjack used for the N-11 UDT Knife.

RICHMOND II VA SHEATHS

Sometime in late 1995 or 1996 Blackjack Knives ceased Ek Knife production in Effingham, IL. When Blackjack Knives eventually declared bankruptcy 1997, the Ek Commando Knife Company returned to Richmond, VA, again under the ownership of Robert Buerlein.

I call this era of knife production in Richmond, VA after Blackjack ceased production, "RICHMOND II".

I am unsure of the timing but at some point either just after the sale to Blackjack or sometime after the Blackjack bankruptcy, the Ek Commando Knife Company moved to a different address in Richmond VA.

There were some changes in the Richmond II Ek knives as compared to previous Richmond Ek knives. About one quarter of the models were dropped, several new models were introduced (especially in the paracord wrap models) and some of the models were renamed.

The model 1's and 2's that were discontinued in the late 1980's in Richmond were re-introduced in 1997 in Richmond II, but only in the M (Micarta) series of knives. Sometime around mid 2007 the model 1's and 2's were offered on the entire knife line including the paracord handled models.

With the Richmond II knives, sheaths are mostly of the nylon web type. However there are several leather sheaths.

LEATHER:There are 4 leather sheaths that are found with Richmond II knives:

TEX SHOEMAKER BLACK
TEX SHOEMAKER BROWN
HISTORICAL EDITION SLIP
HISTORICAL EDITION SLIP W/ BELT CLIP

TEX SHOEMAKER SHEATHS - I found information that stated these leather sheaths were ordered by the Ek Knife company from Tex Shoemaker and Sons Inc., the famous maker of leather holsters and police gear. They are stamped in the front with a large Ek script stamp followed by 3 lines "EK COMMANDO KNIFE" / "RICHMOND, VA U.S.A." / "●●●●●1941●●●●●". They are a well built sheath with round bottom and a retention strap with a snap fastener. They have grommets along the edges that allow various securing options. They are found in both Black and brown leather. The one sheath I observed with a box was dated to the 2013 year.

HISTORICAL EDITION SLIP SHEATHS - These sheaths are reproductions of the WW-II Hamden Later Slip sheath. The slip type sheath is a type without a retaining strap, and depends on friction to retain the knife blade in the sheath.

The first version is a two piece sheath with sewn edge, with the rear portion folded back to form a belt loop and have 5 starred rivets, 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area, 2 at mid sheath, and one at the sheath tip. They have 2 holes at the sheath tip in which is threaded a leg tie, the tie being wrapped on the lower portion of the sheath. They have a stamp on the rear of the belt loop reading "Ek COMMANDO KNIFE" / "RICHMOND VA".

The second version is also a two piece sheath with sewn edge but rather than having the rear portion folded back to form a belt loop, the rear portion is the same length of the front portion and the sheath has a metal belt clip on the rear. These sheaths also have 5 starred rivets, 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area, 2 at mid sheath and one at the sheath tip. They have 2 holes at the sheath tip in which is threaded a leg tie, the tie being wrapped on the lower portion of the sheath. Both outside top edges of the sheath are trimmed at a 45 degree angle. There is no marking on this belt clip sheath.

Both types of these sheaths were issued with the HE-1 and HE-2 Historical Edition knives.

NYLON WEB:The Richmond Nylon Web sheaths are made from heavy (0.125 inch thick, 2-1/4 inch wide) woven nylon webbing with a heavy, coarse, stiff weave like that used for military style canteen/pistol belts. All web sheaths are nominally 13-1/2 inches tall after completion.

There are 3 nylon web designs used in Richmond II:

POINTED BOTTOM D-RING
POINTED BOTTOM D-RING V-BACK
HEAVY POINTED BOTTOM D-RING V-BACK

In addition there are 4 nylon web colors encountered:

BLACK
OLIVE DRAB (OD)
ACU
DESERT TAN

NOTE: ACU is an acronym of "Army Combat Uniform". The ACU camouflage pattern has the colors of the UCP (Universal Camouflage Pattern) a digital military camouflage pattern introduced by the U.S. Military in 2005. But the nylon web used for these sheaths does not have a pattern and the sheath's color appears as a medium gray color.

POINTED BOTTOM D-RING - These sheaths are the earliest of the Richmond II sheaths. The sheath starts from a single piece of nylon web that is nominally 28-29 inches long.

It is bent back to the rear of the sheath and down to a point an inch or so short of the throat where it is sewn in place. Note that this is different than the Richmond and Blackjack sheaths which riveted the belt loop. Two double cap rivets are then inserted through the 2 layers of web, one on each side of the throat and act to reinforce the throat area.

By not extending the belt loop down below the sheath throat, the material savings would allow an extra sheath to be made for every 15-30 sheaths.

Both outside corners of the bottom of the sheath are then cut off with a hot knife at a 45 degree angle. A short piece of thin nylon strap is looped around a D-Ring and a Chicago screw used to fasten it to the rear of the sheath bottom to act as an anchor for a leg tie. Finally, an 8 foot section of paracord are wrapped around the sheath body in the blade area. A third 3 foot section is pigtailed on the D-Ring to act as a leg tie.

POINTED BOTTOM D-RING V-BACK - These sheaths are a later sheath and are again a one piece design. They are almost identical to the construction of the Pointed Bottom D-Ring sheaths but have a difference in the belt loop closure stitching. Instead of the stitching running parallel to and about 3-1/2 inches below the top of the sheath, the stitching is done in an inverted "V" pattern with the point of the inverted V in the center of the sheath at the 4 inch mark and dropping off to both sides. I believe this change was made to allow the sheath to rotate on a pistol belt while the wearer is in the process of sitting down. I use the "V-BACK" designation because the stitching is easily seen on the sheath back but mostly hidden by the retaining strap on the front of the sheath.

An innovation found on some of the later Richmond II sheaths is the "Toggle". Instead of the leg tie paracord being wrapped in the standard pigtail, the paracord was wrapped around a rectangular piece of plastic. The dimentions are 1 x 4 x 3/16 inches with two 1/2 inch holes each centered 1/2 inch in from both ends. It is designed to unwrap and rewrap the leg tie more quickly than the pigtail tie. Some also came with an EK metal Dog Tag.

HEAVY POINTED BOTTOM D-RING V-BACK - From 2 examples I know these sheaths were made with knives issued between the 2010 to 2012 years and possibly longer both earlier and later. They are similar in construction to the Pointed Bottom D-Ring sheaths but are made of a heavy stiff black web that is 1/4 inch rather than the standard 1/8 inch thick webbing. They also use 3 Chicago Screws. Most use the "toggle" leg tie and some have the EK Dog Tag.

[Richmond II PB Black Web] RICHMOND II BLACK WEB POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Single Velcro Retention Strap; Belt Loop; Two Rivets; One Chicago Screw; Single Paracord Wrap; D-Ring Leg Tie;

This is the same design as the Richmond version of the pointed Bottom Nylon Web Sheaths but doesn't have the belt loop riveted at the throat and uses a Chicago screw rather than a rivet to fasten the D-Ring strap onto the sheath. The screw head is always on the sheath rear side.

Note that the black nylon web used in Richmond II sheaths turns a brown color when the nylon is melted. I was told it had something to do with the dye used to color the nylon changing color when heated.

This is the same design as the Richmond II version of the Pointed Bottom Black Nylon Web Sheath but has a different belt loop stitching in an inverted "V" pattern that I believe was done to allow rotation of the sheath when sitting.

Note that the black nylon web used in Richmond II sheaths turns a brown color when the nylon is melted.

This is the same design as the Richmond II Black Web V-Back Pointed Bottom D-Ring sheath but is made from an extra heavy stiff black web that is 1/4 inch thick rather than the standard 1/8 inch thick webbing. They also have 3 Chicago Screws rather than 2 Rivets and 1 Chicago Screw.

These sheaths also have a different label with the www.ekknife.com address.

RICHMOND II HEAVY BLACK WEB 2-STRAP POINTED BOTTOM D-RING SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Nylon Web; One Piece; Textured Weave; Stitched; Double Velcro Retention Strap; Three Chicago Screws; Single Paracord Wrap; Toggle Leg Tie;

This is the same design as the Richmond II Heavy Black Web V-back Pointed Bottom D-ring Sheath directly above but these sheaths have a double retaining strap. Most of these double retaining strap sheaths were issued with the Model 1 and Model 2 knives. The double strap adds extra security against knife loss since the Model 1's and 2's lack a guard that would normally bear against a single strap and help retain the knife.

These sheaths should be a V-Back but the V stiching was eliminated due to stitching needed for the added 2nd. strap.

Again, these sheaths also have a different label with the www.ekknife.com address.

I found information that stated these leather sheaths were ordered by the Ek Knife company from Tex Shoemaker and Sons Inc., the famous maker of leather holsters and police gear. They are a somewhat rare sheath as I've only noted two. This one I observed with a box that was dated to the 2013 year.

KA-BAR OLEAN NY SHEATHS

In May 2014 KA-BAR Knives, Inc. acquired the Ek Commando Knife Company. Initially only two Ek knives were issued by Ka-Bar, the EK43 and EK44 a Model 3 and 4 respectively. Ka-Bar decided to issue the knives with a black hard sheath made of Celcon® a crystalline plastic with high strength and stiffness properties and high fatigue endurance.

A presentation model was later introduced, the EK13, a Model 4 that is issued with a brown leather sheath.

[KaBar Black Leather] KA-BAR BLACK CELCON® SHEATH: Original Issue; Black Celcon® Plastic; Three Piece; Nylon Web Belt Loop; Nylon Retention Strap with Snap; 10 Grommets; No Paracord Wrap;

These hard sheaths are issued with the EK-43 and EK-44 Ka-Bar knives. They are constructed of 2 pieces of Celon Plastic fastened together with 10 grommets. A belt loop is formed with a 2 inch wide loop of black webbing that is fastened to the top rear of the sheath with 3 additional smaller grommets. The Celon rear piece is longer than the front piece and has two molded ramps with indented notches at the base. When the knife is inserted in the sheath, downward pressure on the handle forces the knife's guard to slide down the ramps and snap into the notches thus securing the knife.

The overall length of the sheath is 12-1/2 inches. The belt loop will accept up to a 2 inch belt. The front piece has identification molded into the plastic in 2 lines reading "KA-BAR" / "U.S. EK". The rear piece has additional molding in 3 lines reading "Made in U.S.A." / "Oleon, New York" / "EK44-2". There is also a small label sewn on the bottom rear of the web belt loop that reads in script "John Ek Symbol Commando Knife Co."

[KaBar Tan Leather] KA-BAR TAN LEATHER SHEATH: Presentation Issue; Tan Leather; Two Piece; Smooth Texture; Stitched; Single Retention Strap with Snap Fastener; Belt Loop; 5 Rivets; 2 Grommets; No Paracord Wrap;

These leather sheaths are issued with the Ka-Bar EK-13 Presentation knives. The sheaths are constructed of 2 pieces of tan leather a 7-1/2 inch front piece and an 18 inch rear piece. The top 1 inch of the rear piece is tapered to a point and the top 5-1/2 inch section is folded forward to form a belt loop with the 1 inch of taper stopping just inside the throat area. The sheath also has a welt, a strip of leather that is placed between the two outer layers of the sheath, in the blade area along the outer edge. The layers in the blade area are then stitched together except for the sheath throat. The welt protects the stitching from being cut by the sharp cutting edge of the knife. The sheaths have 5 rolled rivets, 2 to reinforce the sheath throat area, 2 at mid sheath, and one at the sheath tip. They have 2 grommets at the sheath tip for use with a leg tie.

The overall length of the sheath is 12 inches. The belt loop will accept up to a 3-1/2 inch belt. The front piece has the crossed knives with star and "41" in an oval banner. No other identification appears on the sheath.
