BOXES INTRODUCTION

The boxes presented here are organized into groups by location and then into what I believe is their rough order of introduction. However, there is some uncertainty in a few of my placements.

For each box, a small thumbnail picture is shown. By clicking on the thumbnail, you can access a high-resolution picture of the box.

Listed below are all the boxes used for EK Knives that I am aware of.

Note: There are no box images for Miami or St. Augustine knives shown. I have never encountered a Miami box and don't believe any St. Augustine boxes were made.

HAMDEN BOX

Photo: Gunbarrel on usmilitariaforum.com
HAMDEN BOX - The Hamden Box is the first Ek box used. It is Tuck End Box constructed of thin brown non-corrugated cardboard and according to Harvey Reisberg, measures 14 x 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 (LxWxH). I would guess it is formed from a single piece, folded and glued. It has an end flap on at least one end. The end flap has two lines with the words, "STYLE" and under it, "NUMBER" where the model number and serial number can be written in. The Hamden Boxes are very rare.

Since the box end flap has a line where the Style and Serial Number could be entered, the boxes were made up sometime after the start of the knives being serial numbered.

MIAMI BOX

[Miami Box ] MIAMI PRESENTATION BOX - I have never encountered one of these boxes. The only reason I know they exist is from a Price List from 1966 (Shown). Note the 3rd. entry from the bottom, Style PB - Presentation Box.

From the price of $15. I would guess the Miami box was probably a wooden display box.

I suspect the Miami boxes may be rarer than the Hamden boxes.

RICHMOND BOXES

[RichTele Box ]
RICHMOND BLACK TELESCOPE BOX - The Richmond Black Telescope Box was first used when Ek knives moved to the North Lombardy address in Richmond, Virginia. It is a Two Piece Telescope Box constructed of thin white non-corrugated cardboard with the outside sections covered with black paper. It measures 14 x 3-1/4 x 2-1/8 inches (LxWxH).

The top has a circular black adhesive sticker with the Ek logo in white on it. One end of the box has a white knife/sheath identity sticker. Early boxes have the knife wrapped in brown waxed paper. Depending on the year, the box also contained various catalogs, letters and cards.

[RichBkFlapBox] RICHMOND BLACK FLAP BOX - The Richmond Black Flap Box is the second Richmond Ek knives box. It is a Roll End Tuck Top Box. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by rolling tabbed extended bottom pieces over the side flaps at each end into slots in the box bottom. The top has an extended flap which tucks inside the box.

The box is constructed of thin white non-corrugated cardboard covered with black paper and measures 15 X 3-1/8 X 2-1/8 inches (LxWxH). The top has a circular black adhesive sticker with the Ek logo in white on it. One end of the box has a white knife/sheath identity sticker.

Most of these boxes do not have the brown waxed paper wrap. Depending on the year, the box also contained various catalogs, letters and/or cards. This box was used as early as 1988.

[RichTanFlapBox] RICHMOND TAN FLAP BOX - The Richmond Tan Flap Box is the third Richmond Ek knives box. It is a Roll End Tuck Top Box. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by rolling the extended bottom pieces over the side flaps at each end. The box is constructed of thin brown non-corrugated cardboard and measures 15 X 3-1/4 X 2-1/8 inches (LxWxH).

There is no black sticker with the Ek logo in white on it. One end of the box has a white knife/sheath identity sticker. None of these boxes have the brown waxed paper wrap.

Some of the boxes contained a cloth patch. They were used mostly for the Desert Patrol model knives. Also some early BlackJack WAR models from stock transferred from Richmond when Blackjack took over manufacture of "production knives" in 1993 while Richmond continued custom Ek Commando knife-making.

[RichWhiteFlapBox] RICHMOND WHITE FLAP BOX - The Richmond White Flap Box is the forth Richmond Ek knives box. It is a Roll End Tuck Top Box. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by rolling the extended bottom pieces over the side flaps at each end. The box is constructed of very thin light brown non-corrugated cardboard and covered with a glossy white paper. The boxes measure 14-3/4 X 3-1/8 X 2-1/4 inches (LxWxH).

There is a tan sticker with the Ek logo in light green on some of them. Some boxes have a white knife/sheath identity sticker on one end of the box. Some boxes have neither the logo sticker or the identity sticker. Some of the boxes contained a cloth patch. They were used mostly for the Desert Patrol model knives.

[Rich Shipping Box] RICHMOND SHIPPING BOX - The Richmond Shipping Box was used to mail Richmond Ek knives to purchasers. It is a standard Tuck End Box with end flaps on both ends. The box is constructed of thick corrugated cardboard. The boxes measure 15-1/2 X 3-1/2 X 2-5/8 inches (LxWxH).

There is a mailing label and a small "Signature Required" sticker on the box. Both ends are sealed with reinforced paper packing tape.

BLACKJACK BOXES

[BlackJackBox] BLACKJACK LARGE BLACK/YELLOW BOX - The Blackjack Large Black/Yellow Box is the box used by Blackjack for the Ek knives they produced from 1993, when they took over the manufacture of Ek "production knives", through 1995. It is a Roll End Tuck Front Box. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by rolling tabbed extended bottom pieces over the side flaps at each end into slots in the box bottom. The top has an extended flap which closes over the front of the box. Ears on either end of the extended flap fold back and tuck inside the box ends holding it closed. The tuck front box holds closed more securely than the tuck top box.

The box is constructed of a heavy corrugated cardboard with the outside printed with a pattern of the Ek Logo in yellow on a black background. The box measures 14-1/2 X 3-1/4 X 2-1/8 inches (LxWxH).

One end of the box has a white knife/sheath identity sticker. Some of the boxes had white tissue wrapping paper and brown or white thin cardboard slip-on blade guards. Some contained a small paper inspection tag. Most did not contain any paperwork or patches.

[Small Blackjack Box] BLACKJACK SMALL BLACK/YELLOW BOX - The Blackjack Small Black/Yellow Box was used by Blackjack for only one knife, the N-11UDT. The Blackjack small box has a different design than the large box. It is a Reverse Tuck End Box with an locking tab on the center of the long side. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by first forming the box around it's long axis and alligning two slanted slots on the the box side. The protruding tab on the side is then squeezed together to slip through the slanted slots where they will spring out against the inside of the box sides holding it closed. Contents are accessed from either box end.

The box is constructed of a heavy corrugated cardboard with the outside printed with a pattern of the Ek Logo in yellow on a black background. The small box measures 12 X 3-1/4 X 2-1/8 inches (LxWxH) which is 2-1/2 inches shorter in lenth than the large box.

One of the box end flaps has a white knife/sheath identity sticker. None seemed to have a paper inspection tag or any other paperwork or patches.

AHF BOXES

[Knife Disp Box ] INDIVIDUAL KNIFE DISPLAY BOX - These AHF (American Historical Foundation) wooden boxes were issued with all knives of the American Elite Forces Fighting Knife Collection and other commemorative knives issued by AHF. The boxes measure 15 x 5-1/2 x 2-1/4 inches. Some are made of walnut, others of mahogany. All have a sliding clear acrylic plastic cover and are suitable for wall, shelf or table display.

They could also be ordered as a separate item and one of 4 types of velvet lining could be specified: black, maroon, olive drab or camouflage. The majority of the boxes issued with knives have no lining as shown in the image.

[Knife Disp Box ] 45TH. ANNIVERSARY ISSUE BOX - These AHF (American Historical Foundation) wooden boxes were issued with original Hamden bladed knives on the 45th. Anniversary of John Ek Knives in 1986. The boxes measure 15-3/4 x 7-3/4 L x W . The top surface is slanted with the back 3 inches and the front 1-1-4 inches. They are made of a dark wood, have a clear acrylic plastic cover secured with 4 screws and are more suitable as a table display.

[Miami Velvet Box ] AHF MIAMI GREEN VELVET BOX - These AHF (American Historical Foundation) boxes were issued with the last of the Miami blades. This includes 50 Model 2's, 50 Model 4's, 50 pair of Presentation Throwing Knives and 50 pair of Field Grade Throwing Knives. These items were issued around 1986.

The boxes measure 15 x 4 x 2 inches. They are of a clam-shell design, have 2 button type brass release catches on the front face, are covered with green velvet and have a camouflage lining.

[Elite Forces Plaque1] [Elite Forces Plaque2] AHF ELITE FORCES DISPLAY PLAQUE - These AHF (American Historical Foundation) wall display plaques were an optional item for those who wished to display all six issues of the American Elite Forces Fighting Knife Collection.

The plaque has a painted wood frame with black velvet covering in the knife area. The face has 6 L-hooks and 6 posts covered with soft tubing. The hole in the extended tang of the knife is placed over the L-hook and the tip of the knife rests on the associated post. There is a brass plate with the words"AMERICAN ELITE FORCES / FIGHTING KNIFE COLLECTION / ISSUED BY THE AMERICAN HISTORICAL FOUNDATION / LIMITED EDITION" mounted in the center near the top

The plaques measure approximately 30 x 17 inches. It is believed that only about 50 of these displays were made.

The first picture shows the plaque alone and the second with mounted knives.

RICHMOND II BOXES

[Rich II Tele Box ] RICHMOND II BLACK TELESCOPE BOX - When Ek Knives moved from the North Lombardy address to the Forest Hill address in Richmond, they used this Black Telescope Box with a different dimension for the height.

The Richmond II Black Telescope Box is a two piece telescope box constructed of thin white non-corrugated cardboard with the outside of both sections covered with black paper. It measures 14 x 3-1/4 x 2-5/8 inches (LxWxH). Although the top section of the box has the same dimensions as the original Richmond Black Telescope Box, the bottom (inner) section is 1/4 inch taller. This makes the box a bit easier to open as you can grip the extended portion.

Initially, the box top had the familiar black adhesive sticker with the Ek logo in white on it but with a new end label with the Forest Hill address. Later a larger rectangular adhesive label sticker was used and placed on the box top. It has the American Flag in color and the 5 Wars Ek logo in black & white on it. It also has a location for the model as well as the shipping date Month and Year to be hand written.

Some boxes have the knife in a white cloth bag. Depending on the year, the box also contained various catalogs, letters and cards.

[Rich II Flap Box ] RICHMOND II BLACK FLAP BOX - At some period at the Forest Hill address a black Flap box was used. I believe it's use was only temporary. The box is identical to the earlier Richmond Black Flap Box in both materials and construction. The larger box top rectangular adhesive label was used on these boxes.

I have a set of 4 Ek knives, models PL/M1 through PL/M4 that I ordered and were shipped March 2006 that used these boxes but I don't know for how long a period they were used. Later knives reverted back to using the Richmond II Black Telescope boxes.

BARK RIVER EK COMMANDO #2 BOX

[BK&T Box ] BARK RIVER EK COMMANDO #2 BOX - In 2001 BARK RIVER (BK&T - Bark River Knife and Tool ), while they were still in Bark River, Michigan, made a run of an Ek branded knife called the "Ek Commando #2". The knife is also known as the EK 2C, the "C" standing for "Compact".

It is a Roll End Tuck Top Box. These boxes are die cut in a single flat piece and assembled by rolling tabbed extended bottom pieces over the side flaps at each end into slots in the box bottom. The top has an extended flap which tucks inside the box.

But while the ordinary Roll End Tuck Top Box has openings in the bottom, this box has an extra length of tab that folds inside the box and contains the slots that the side flaps go into. As a result there are no openings in the box bottom. The box is constructed of corrugated cardboard covered with white paper. It measures 12-5/8 x 4 x 3-1/4 inches (LxWxH).

Two labels can be found on these boxes. One, a small white sticker is fond on an outside end. The second label is larger and pasted on the box side.

The box contains the sheath and the knife. The knife is wrapped in several layers of tissue paper held closed with a plain small white sticker. To my knowledge, no paperwork was included in the box.

HISTORICAL EDITION BOX

[He Box ] HISTORICAL EDITION BOX - This box was used only for the reproduction WW-II Hamden Style 1 or Style 2 knives. It is a Two Piece Telescope Box constructed of thin tan non-corrugated cardboard with the outside of both sections covered with light brown paper. It measures 15-1/4 X 3-3/8 X 2-1/2 inches (LxWxH).

The printing on the box is close to that of the original Hamden box but the dimensions differ. One end of the top section has the words STYLE over NO. Both are over a line on which the Style (HE1 or HE2) and the Serial Number (Ennn) are hand written.

The HE1 and HE2 knives were some of the last knives produced by Richmond II before Ek Knives was sold to KA-BAR.

KA-BAR BOX

[KaBar Box ] KA-BAR BOX - In 2014 Ek Commando Knives was sold to KA-BAR Knives of Olean, New York. They began sales of two Ek knife models in 2015.

The KA-BAR Box is used for the EK43 and EK44 model knives, whose blade styles correspond to the Richmond and Richmond II era's Model 3 and Model 4 knives.

It is a Two Piece Telescope Box constructed of a tan non-corrugated cardboard with the outside of both sections covered with light brown speckled paper. Also printed on the paper is a white square label that covers most of the top and front side of the upper section and most of the front and bottom of the bottom section. The box measures 15-1/4 X 3 -3/8 X 2-1/2 inches (LxWxH).

The box contains the sheath and the knife with a white cardboard blade guard. Also included is a Limited Warranty paper.

BOX LABELS

The box labels presented here are organized by era.

Listed below are all the labels used for Ek knives that I am aware of:

RICHMOND LABELS - There is a black and white sticker and three labels that were used for the Richmond knives. The sticker was used on all the Richmond black telescope and black flap boxes. The stickers are 2 inchs in diameter and came on a 2-1/4 inch strip of wax paper. They were peeled off and stuck to the tops of the black boxes.

The box end labels are 3 x 2 inches (W x H) and are individual items with a paper peel-off backing. An unused sticker and blank label are shown below.

[Rich Sticker] [RichLabelBlankF] [RichLabelBlankR]
Examples of the three label types are shown below. The first label is found on the majority of Richmond knives. The second and third labels have the 4 War logo and I'm guessing they were used between 1990 and 1993.

[Rich Label 1] [Rich Label 2] [Rich Label 3]

BLACKJACK LABELS - There are at least six labels that were used for Backjack Ek knives. The first image is an early label put over the bottom portion of a Richmond box. The second image is a slightly later label. The third and forth image are types found on the majority of Blackjack Ek knives. The fifth image is a later Blackjack Ek label using a bar code.

The sixth image I believe is a very late Blackjack label. At the top of the image is a red spot. What you are seeing is a Blackjack Knives red over black box turned inside out. Probably used at the very end of Blackjack's EK association. Rather than have more black and yellow boxes made, they used their Blackjack branded red box turned inside out for some of their remaining Ek knives.

[BlackJack 1] [BlackJack 2] [BlackJack 3]
[BlackJack 4] [BlackJack 5] [BlackJack 6]

BARK RIVER LABEL - There are two labels for the EK Commando #2 knife box. The first is a small white sticker attached to the box end with just the name"Ek Commando #2". The second label is larger and pasted on the box side. It has the Ek Logo and the words Ek #2C COMMANDO KNIFE / Expedition Knives INC.

[Bark River] [Expedition]

RICHMOND II LABELS - There are three Richmond II labels that I am aware of. The first bears the 5 wars logo. The second and third bear the 6 wars logo. I'm not sure, but I believe the second label was used for a short time before the third label which was used until the end of production in 2014.

[RichII 1] [RichII 2] [RichII 3]

HISTORICAL EDITION LABEL - There are no labels for the Ek Historical Edition knives. Rather there is a location on the one of the box ends for the Style and No. to be hand written.

[Hist Ed Label]

KA-BAR LABELS - There are 4 labels for the KA-BAR Ek knives. One for the EK43 one for the EK44 model, one for the EK13 Presentation knives and the forth for the Model 5 Navy Reproduction.
